Amazing Grace

This article really brought to my attention about how much some people may take advantages of the things we do have. We do not realize how much we have and how little other people may have in the world because we are to busy worrying about the things we want and not necessarily need. The bottom of page 4 really stuck out to me when it says "You just cover up....and hope you wake up the next morning" says a father of four children, one of them an infant one month old, as they prepare to climb into their sleeping bags in hats and coats on a December night. Some people in this world take advantage of the things they have and do not realize some of us may have more things then we know what to do with. Where as other people in this world are lucky they are able to sleep in a sleeping bag because some just live in the cold every day of there life because they do not have a place to call
home, that they can go to at the end of the day to stay warm. Its happening right around us in New York where thousands of people are homeless or stay in shelters. http://www.coalitionforthehomeless.org/the-catastrophe-of-homelessness/facts-about-homelessness/
Another quote that stuck out to me was "I ask how many people in this building now have AIDS. "In this building? Including children, maybe 27 people. That s just in this section." It saddens me how people in this area do not have money but will inject needles with different type of drugs in their bodies and then pass it on to their children. That is just cruel to the kids and cruel to your bodies. Its ridiculous what people will do out their now a days and not care if they are harming themselves or anyone around them. For example on page on page 11 it talks about how the mother of the kids boyfriend raped the little girl in her own bed. I don't get how anyone can do that to anyone especially at that age, even at that it should not happen to anyone, but people are "sick" now a days and do whatever they want to please themselves and make them happy. Its awful to hear about what some people in this world go through on a daily basis and knowing that you may not be able to prevent it because of the people they are surrounded by is awful and should not be done to anyone in this world, especially little kids. This article called Amazing Grace, by Jonothan Kozol,  opened up my eyes to how much I have in this world compared to other people, like the ones shown in the article.

  1. Do you think its possible to make people aware of the way other people have to live their lives? I agree with you, this article also opened up my eyes to how thankful I am compared to the way the people in the Bronx have to live.

  2. After you mentioning the part where Kozol talks about the mother of the kids boyfriend raped the little girl in her own bed; do you think these issues could change or do you think there will always be those people who are "sick" and do whatever they want without thinking of others? I ask this because to me I think there will always be those kind of people in this world, even though we wish there weren't. Also I do agree, this article opened up my eyes to the world today as well.
